MW4 split screen: what works and what doesn't

Activision has confirmed two-player split-screen multiplayer on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It has not confirmed split-screen for PC, Switch 2, the campaign or DMZ.

The short answer

PlatformSplit-screen multiplayer
PS5Yes, two players
Xbox Series XSYes, two players
PCNo
Nintendo Switch 2No
CampaignNo
DMZNot confirmed; online-only mode

Activision's own support FAQ says split-screen multiplayer — two players sharing one screen — will be available on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. That is the only official confirmation.

What split-screen covers

The confirmation is for multiplayer. It does not say the campaign has local co-op, and it does not list DMZ. DMZ is an online extraction mode with a persistent stash and live servers; there is no couch co-op version of that loop.

If you want to play with someone in the same room, plan on standard multiplayer: Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Search & Destroy and the rest of the 17 launch modes.

What you need

  • Two controllers.
  • Two profiles signed in on the same console.
  • A multiplayer mode that supports local play.
  • Enough screen space; a split-screen match halves each player's view.

Activision has not published a detailed account or sign-in requirement for the second player beyond the standard platform profile system. If the second controller does not prompt a profile, sign it in from the console dashboard before launching MW4.

What about PC and Switch 2?

The official FAQ does not list PC or Switch 2 for split-screen. Treat both as unsupported until Activision says otherwise. Cross-play is still available: you can play with friends online across PS5, Xbox, PC and Switch 2, but not share one screen on PC or Switch 2.

Campaign and DMZ

There is no campaign co-op. The 16-mission story is a solo experience, and split-screen is not part of it. DMZ is squad-based online co-op; you can play with up to three operators, but each player needs their own screen and connection.

Alternatives

  • Online co-op: DMZ with a squad, cross-play enabled.
  • Online multiplayer: the full 6v6 and Ground War playlist.
  • Same-room play: PS5 or Xbox Series X|S split-screen multiplayer.
