All 12 core maps
| Map | Setting |
|---|---|
| Cachette | French rail terminal with a wine warehouse and mechanic's garage converted into a covert armory |
| Coal | Abandoned Soviet coal processing plant in remote mountains, with a fallen smokestack and slurry river |
| Lithium | Rural Mexican lithium refinery under the Sierra mountains, with interactive garage doors |
| Lotus | Korean fishing village after an amphibious assault, with a market, hostel and boathouse |
| Mumbai | Dense residential district around a Victorian market, split by a rail line |
| Munition | Active North Korean command facility with a munitions depot and monitoring rooms |
| Nautical | Korean theatre; not playable in the August beta |
| Reactor U92 | Korean reactor site; not playable in the beta |
| Rooftops | Vertical urban map; playable in the beta |
| Sentry | Korean theatre; not playable in the beta |
| Silkworm | Korean theatre; playable in the beta |
| Transit 213 | Transit setting; playable in the beta |
Six maps were in the beta: Cachette, Lithium, Lotus, Rooftops, Silkworm and Transit 213. The other six — Coal, Mumbai, Munition, Nautical, Reactor U92 and Sentry — are launch-day discoveries, which is why map knowledge will be uneven for the first week.
Ground War: Combat Outpost launches with three maps — Forest, Imjin Farmland and Wolves Stadium. The mode is built around establishing Outposts, earning resources and spending them on further objectives, with vehicles, infantry and airborne killstreaks in the same space.
Gunfight returns with four dedicated arenas — Cafe, Library, NYC and Smuggler — plus Gunfight 10v10. Kill Block is a separate dynamic map at the Westbridge Training Facility that reconfigures layout, sightlines and weather between rounds, with more than 500 combinations and Slabs that reference Crash, Highrise and Shoot House.

Inflation makes every elimination increase your in-match fortune — and your value as a target. Hijack is a data-spike escort: carry, throw or pass the spike toward the enemy Comm Station, plant it, and defend it while the defenders try to defuse. Collateral is the Counter-Strike-shaped mode: 5v5, one life, pistol start, in-match cash, and a buy menu for armour, perks, equipment and better guns. Die and you lose the loadout; the money carries between rounds.
Counter Attack is a new objective mode. Frontline returns with fixed team spawns and points for kills pushed into enemy territory. Shipment arrives October 27, Possession on October 29 and Infected on October 30.
Movement: no omnimovement, more traversal
Infinity Ward removed Black Ops omnimovement and built a chained traversal system instead. The mechanics that matter:
- Mantle Slide — mantle directly into a slide over a car hood or low cover.
- Mantle Momentum — keep forward velocity through the mantle instead of hard-stopping.
- Mantle Steering — steer, ADS or abort mid-mantle.
- Supine Slide — double-tap crouch while sprinting for a longer, lower slide that ends on your back, feet forward, still able to shoot.
- Pipe Climb / Fast Pipe Slide — climb building pipework, or hold crouch to drop down it quickly.
- Hang Shimmy / Hang Lean / Climbing Jump — move along ledges, aim with full rotation while hanging, and jump in any direction from ledges, ladders and pipes.
The movement course at launch teaches the chain and rates runs from C- to S. Spend twenty minutes there before your first match; the difference between a good and bad mantle is usually the difference between winning and losing a gunfight.
Gunplay: Ballistic Authority
The single biggest change is the removal of hipfire bloom. Bullets now leave the barrel where it points, so accuracy is determined by sway, recoil, movement and handling rather than a random cone. Infinity Ward's summary is "no bloom, no guesswork, no doubt."
Supporting changes:
- Weapon and world share one field of view, so the gun sits naturally in frame.
- Muzzle smoke is masked around your aim point, tuned per optic.
- Depth of field is split into world and weapon settings.
- Weapon bloom is replaced by barrel-based firing, and laser attachments show the true path.
- Tactical Sprint now degrades as stamina drains instead of running as a fixed burst.
Create-a-class and progression
Create-a-Class unlocks at Player Level 4. Before that you use preset loadouts. Weapon unlocks run to Level 55, and each weapon has its own level track up to 72 for the launch guns.
| Unlock | Level |
|---|---|
| Han 86, ISO Nightshade, Rezi 12, Finn LMG, MAR-9, KG-7 Vulcan, FSS Carbon Edge | 4 |
| M4 | 14 |
| Hyeon Burst | 21 |
| Kastov 762 | 34 |
| PPSh-41 | 30 |
| X-58 Nyx | 46 |
| Oris 8.6 | 11 |
| Astaroth .57 | 25 |
| Signal 50 | 50 |
Attachments unlock once per account, not once per weapon. If you unlock a muzzle on the M4, the same muzzle is available on every compatible gun. Apex Attachments are equipped separately, do not consume a slot, and unlock by fully levelling a supported weapon. Examples include the Kastov Arc disruption barrel, the ISO Trace RFID tracker, the Rezi Enforcer pump kit and the Oris Razor throwing-knife module.
Perks are split into three categories. Confirmed names include Fast Hands, Battle Hardened, Lethal Reach, Ghost and Overkill. Field Upgrades include the Riot Shield, now a destructible deployable rather than a weapon. Equipment includes Frag, Flash, Smoke, Stim, Molotov and the new Bomb Glider. Smartstreaks let objective play contribute to killstreak progress, not just kills.
Prestige has two paths: Regular Prestige resets you to Level 1 but keeps Create-a-Class unlocks; Classic Prestige is the traditional full reset with extra rewards. Both have their own milestones.
What to play first
1. Movement course — learn mantle slide and supine slide before you queue. 2. Team Deathmatch on Lotus or Cachette — compact maps that force the new gunplay. 3. Domination on Mumbai — the rail line creates natural rotations and tests the new mantle routes. 4. Collateral — the economy mode is the most demanding and the most different from standard CoD. 5. Ground War: Combat Outpost — leave it until you know the weapon recoil patterns; the engagements are longer.
The best guns, loadouts and settings pages cover the meta in more detail.
FAQ
How many maps does MW4 launch with?
12 core 6v6 maps, 3 Ground War maps, 4 Gunfight arenas and the dynamic Kill Block map — 20 multiplayer maps in total.
Does MW4 have omnimovement?
No. It uses grounded, chained movement: mantle slide, mantle momentum, supine slide, pipe climb and hang mechanics. Omnimovement stays in Black Ops.
Is hipfire accurate in MW4?
Yes. Ballistic Authority removes hipfire bloom, so shots go where the barrel points. Recoil, sway and handling still matter.
When does Shipment come to MW4?
October 27, 2026, four days after launch. Possession follows on October 29 and Infected on October 30.
