Check in this order
1. Activision Online Services — the official per-platform status page lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Battle.net, Steam and Xbox on PC as online, degraded or offline. 2. Your platform's status — PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Steam and Battle.net each have their own outage pages. A PSN outage looks exactly like a Call of Duty outage from inside the game. 3. Your party — if three friends on two platforms are also disconnected, the problem is upstream. If only you are out, it is local.
At the time of this update (October 21, 2026), Activision's status page listed PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Battle.net, Steam and Xbox on PC as online. That is a pre-launch snapshot, not a guarantee for October 23.
What launch day will look like
Call of Duty launches areamong the largest online events of the year. Expect:
- Login queues and "Connecting" screens for the first few hours.
- "Networking failed to start (Hueneme Negev)" errors in waves.
- Party invites failing while solo play works.
- Packet burst and latency spikes in populated regions.
- Store and progression screens loading slowly.
None of those require a reinstall. They require patience and a status page.
The errors you will actually see
| Error | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Networking failed to start (Hueneme Negev) | No session with Activision services | Check status, wait, then local network fixes |
| Connection failed | Session dropped | Retry, check party, restart client |
| Timeout / unable to connect | Region or NAT issue | Wired connection, DNS, NAT type |
| Packet burst | Local or server-side packet loss | Wired, close downloads, try another region |
| "Servers are unavailable" | Platform-side outage | Wait for status page update |
Is it you or them?
Run this 60-second test: 1. Open the official status page on your phone, not the console. 2. Open your platform's status page. 3. Try a different online game on the same connection. 4. Ask a friend on a different network to log in.
If the other game works and your friend is online, the problem is your MW4 session or your platform account. If neither works, it is your network. If both the status pages are red, it is not you.
When to wait
Wait if the status page shows an incident, if your whole party is out, or if the error appears within seconds of launch. Server capacity recovers faster than a reinstall completes.
When to troubleshoot
Troubleshoot if the status page is green, your friends are online and you are the only one failing. Start with a router power cycle, then wired connection, then DNS, then NAT type. The fixes guide has the full sequence.
What this page is not
This page is not a live API and does not claim real-time server health. It is a manually reviewed guide with a timestamp. Any site that shows a green "LIVE" badge without a source is guessing. Use the official status link.
FAQ
Is there an official MW4 server status page?
Yes. Activision Support's Online Services page lists status by platform for Modern Warfare 4. It is the only official source.
Are MW4 servers down right now?
Check the official Activision status page and your platform's status page. This guide does not display live server data and will not guess.
Why does MW4 say Networking failed to start?
The game could not establish a session with Activision's services. It is usually server-side during launch windows, but can also be a local NAT, DNS or VPN issue.
Should I reinstall if I cannot connect?
No. Check the status pages and your party first. Reinstalling does not fix a server outage and costs you 115 GB of time.
