MW4 review roundup: the campaign lands, the rest is unproven

The embargo lifted with campaign-only reviews. The early consensus is the strongest Call of Duty campaign since 2019 — and a multiplayer verdict that nobody can give you yet.

This is a campaign-only snapshot. Reviewers did not have live multiplayer servers at the embargo, and DMZ early access opened October 20, after most campaign reviews were filed. Treat the numbers as a campaign score, not a full-game score.

What reviewers agree on

The campaign is the best since Modern Warfare (2019). IGN calls it "a consistently strong set of missions" that juggles a bloated cast and says goodbye to familiar faces while building bonds with new ones. GameSpot frames it as the best Call of Duty campaign since 2019, while criticising the final boss encounters as short and the mission design as short on new ideas.

The Korean half is the standout. The South Korean squad, the Hajin City invasion and the behind-enemy-lines mission Stranded draw the most praise. Stranded borrows ideas from DMZ and is the one mission reviewers consistently call a highlight.

The story takes real risks. Killing Makarov in Mission 2 and putting Price on trial as a fugitive is not the safe sequel. Some reviewers found the cast overstuffed; almost all agreed the ending lands.

Eight hours is the right length. GameSpot measured around eight hours on Normal, compared with five to six for recent entries. The extra time is used on set pieces and the open-area mission, not on filler.

What reviewers criticise

  • Boss encounters are short. The Archer confrontation is praised for performance and staging but criticised for mechanical simplicity.
  • Mission design is conservative. The campaign's best ideas are in Stranded; the rest is a well-executed tour of Call of Duty set pieces rather than a reinvention.
  • The PC build has the usual launch caveats. Shader compilation, driver requirements and the TPM 2.0/Secure Boot gate are real friction. Performance at Recommended specs is good; lower-end systems need upscaling.
  • Multiplayer is unproven. The beta was well received for visibility and hipfire, but launch balance, server stability and the 12-map pool are unknown.

What the beta tells us about multiplayer

The August beta ran two weekends and left a clear impression: Ballistic Authority works. Removing hipfire bloom made close-range fights more predictable, and the weapon/world FOV unification made the gun feel less detached from the screen.

The maps are compact and flank-heavy. Cachette, Lotus and Lithium were the beta favourites; Mumbai and the larger Ground War maps are launch-day unknowns. The movement system rewards chaining, but it has a higher skill floor than omnimovement, which will make the first week messy.

The risk is content volume. Twelve new 6v6 maps is a healthy launch, but the post-launch cadence is aggressive: Shipment on October 27, Possession on October 29, Infected on October 30, then Season 1 on November 6. If the servers hold, there is plenty to play. If they do not, the first week will be remembered for queues.

DMZ is the swing factor

DMZ is the mode that could make MW4 a daily habit or a one-month game. The Hajin map is large, the FOB gives progression a home, and the threat system creates genuine tension. It is also the mode most likely to frustrate solo players and the hardest to review in a week.

If you liked the original DMZ beta and wanted it to be deeper, this is the mode for you. If you bounced off extraction shooters, MW4's campaign and multiplayer have to carry the purchase.

Is it worth $69.99?

Buy at $69.99 if: you play multiplayer or DMZ regularly, you want the campaign at launch, and you have a current-gen console or a PC that meets the Recommended spec. The volume of content — 16 missions, 12 maps, 33 weapons, 33 operators, a full DMZ — is a normal premium package.

Wait for a sale if: you only want the campaign. Eight hours is a good campaign, not a $70 campaign, and the story will still be there in three months. The same applies if your PC is at the minimum spec or you refuse to enable TPM/Secure Boot.

Skip if: you are on PS4 or Xbox One, you expect Zombies, or you only play Warzone. Warzone stays free, and the MW4 integration does not arrive until Season 1.

Is the Vault Edition worth it?

Only if you were going to buy BlackCell. The $30 upgrade roughly matches one BlackCell season and adds the operator packs and five blueprints. If you skip Battle Passes, the Standard Edition is the correct purchase. The full breakdown is on the editions page.

The verdict

The campaign is a genuine high point for the rebooted series and the first Call of Duty story in years that takes its own characters seriously. The multiplayer and DMZ are built on a strong beta and a clear design philosophy, but they are unproven at launch scale.

That makes MW4 a buy for players who intend to play the live modes, and a wait for campaign-only players. The score will be settled by server stability and the first balance patch, not by the embargo.
